Dracunculiasis, more commonly known as Guinea worm disease (GWD), is an infection caused by the parasite Dracunculus medinensis. The parasite is alternately known in English as "Guinea worm", "Medina worm", and finally "fiery serpent" which reflects the Latin root word Dracunculus meaning "little dragon".

what stops animals from getting it? are they naturally immune?
I thought, well in ...
I thought, well in bio class if I remember correctly, if the worm is broken, the acids it releases kills the human if the acids get into the bloodstream, that's the reason why they pull it out slowly, and they wrap it so it doesn't go back inside, and they pull it out slowly and overtime so it does not snap.
Often the people cannot walk or move so they do not risk the possibility of snapping the worm.

@tsotsoko Thank you ...
@tsotsoko Thank you for giving a different perspective on this subject. Many people seem to turn to the obvious answers of boiling water, etc., and I know that I atleast certainly did not think of any of the reasons why this would be a problem for people in villages affected by this parasite. I truly hope that this parasite is erradicated.
Yeah,
They still ...
Yeah,
They still have to make sure they filter all their drinking water with a cloth to filter out all the water fleas that contain the larvae. All it takes is for one person to get infected and it could spread like wildfire all over again. They tend to produce thousands of larva each time.
This video states that the worms themselves cannot kill. This is wrong. Sometimes the worms wind up in the heart by accident, triggering death.

What this video ...
What this video fails to make clear is that unless you live in (or visit and stupidly drink unclean water) one of the 4 hotspots (4 countries in Africa) in which this disease is still endemic, you are pretty much guaranteed you won't contract guinea worm ever. It is the only human parasite that is believed possible to fully eradicate within the next several years (and without the use of vaccines).

I grew up in a different place, we don't have these type of worm. But anyway, I can give you a little bit of knowledge.
Boiling water needs woods for fire. And they are expensive. And a lot of NGO are active to protect the forest (nature) from extinction, making the price farther more expensive.
Number 2, they don't believe that it's from the water. They would say it's a trick to make them buy things.

Sudan and Ghana Please Help Eradicate Guinea Worm in Africa a Parasitic Virus
www.cartercenter.org The Carter Center, headed by former US President Jimmy Carter, has deployed a wide initiative to eradicate Guinea worm in Africa. Two decades ago the disease -- a parasitic infection --afflicted millions of people in Africa and Asia. In 2007 there were less than 10000 cases, most in Sudan and Ghana. Through health education to prevent contamination, distributing water filters, and applying safe chemical treatment to water sources, The Carter Center says Guinea worm may become only the second disease to be eradicated after smallpox. Available video includes B-roll of contaminated water sources, people with the disease, soundbites from Carter and edited packages on eradication efforts in Sudan and Ghana.

Guinea Pigs - a Cute Little Pet Living a Lie
True or false: Guinea pigs are small, hybrid animals that have been cultivated and cross-bred from wild pigs originally captured on the island of New Guinea The fact that this animal was originally cross-bred in the laboratory to establish a pig breed that was both of friendly disposition and small enough to keep as a house pet, is the reason that the guinea pig still remains associated with labs in most of our minds today
